A day in the life of a Pixie Ambassador

Pixie Ambassador -Sarah Cooper

Sarah Cooper joined Pixie in April as a Pixie Ambassador. Pixie Ambassadors explore local independent businesses and develop relationships with their teams and owners. They help local independent businesses join our Pixie community and get the most out of their participation. ant to find out more... Here is a day in the life of Sarah (and Poppy!)

7:30am - My daughter Poppy wakes up. We have breakfast together - weetabix gets everywhere...

8:30am - After all the breakfast excitement, Poppy goes for her nap and I make the most of the peace and quiet to make some phone calls. I usually make a quick call to the places that I plan to visit, find out if the owner will be in that day, then map out my route.

10:00am - I strap Poppy into the pram and we go for cruise along Lordship Lane, one of the coolest indie districts in Dulwich. Now that my job is finding all these new, cool places my friends rely on me for recommendations - so I’ve got to keep up!

10:15am - We start scouting out the great independents that we come across. They’re all so interesting - I find I’m always drawn to those with a funky shop front. But I learnt quickly not to judge an indie by its front! You never know what creative person is hidden behind that door...

10:30am - I start visiting shops, cafes and restaurants... Manoeuvring the pram through small shop entrances isn’t easy, but the owners are always so friendly and willing to help.

10:40am - After going in, having a browse and being very tempted to buy everything in the shop, I chat to the owner about their business. I try to sound out if they’re the right kind of creative, open-minded person who’d be on board with the Pixie culture and that our mission resonates with them.

Having the baby is a great ice breaker - as long as she’s not trying to climb out and break everything in their shop!

10:45am - If they seem interested, I start explaining the ethos behind Pixie and give them a demo of our app. A lot of the time they’re really enthusiastic and we swap email addresses so I can send them our business brochure later.

12:30pm - Poppy is needing her lunch so I’ll usually stop too and visit one of the interesting cafes or delis that I’ve passed. Sometimes I chat to the owner about Pixie while I’m there, but often I decide to come back another time. It’s important to pick the right moment - people are much more willing to listen and talk when they’re not rushed off their feet at lunch time!

1:30pm - I set back off on the adventure discovering the indies of Dulwich.

2:30pm - I wander by some windows and do some more browsing and chatting about Pixie. Being a Pixie ambassador is great when it comes to my friends’ birthdays. I’m always finding really amazing presents for people while out exploring.

3:30pm - I go and chat to my last few businesses before heading home. One of the best things about being a Pixie ambassador is the chance to meet so many interesting people. I feel really lucky to be going out talking to creative people, rather than sitting at a desk all day - which I couldn’t do with Poppy anyway!

4:30pm - Back at home I start planning the Pixie Dulwich launch party. It’s a really exciting opportunity to bring together our newly signed up indies with the other creative people we’ve met in the area and influential local bloggers for a fun evening of food, drinks and story-telling.

5:30pm - I start emailing the people that I’ve met that day and guiding the independents who’ve already signed up through the next steps of joining the Pixie community.

6:30pm - Bath time then bedtime for Poppy.

7:00pm - I put some pictures on social media of the businesses I’ve been visiting, then do some work growing my other business before my own dinner and an evening relaxing with my husband.

11:00pm - Head to bed feeling tired but fulfilled after another fun day as a Pixie ambassador.

If you also love exploring and supporting independents, our sales-based ambassador role with both a day rate and commission benefits could be perfect for you! Email us now - careers@pixieapp.co

Top Tips for growing a Pixie Community

180307_PIXIE_headhshots__0058_WEB.jpg

Area Manager -

Amelia Carroll

We chatted to Pixie's resident growth guru about how best to go about building a movement.

1.     Be authentic

Live the brand and what it stands for. If you believe in what you have to offer, it will shine through.

2.    Be open-minded

Don’t make assumptions about whether someone wants or doesn’t want what you are offering. The choice join our Pixie community is their decision to make, not ours.

3.     Be prepared

A goal without a plan is just a wish. Know your ‘pitch’ off by heart: have your story ready before you approach someone and know where you are going. But be adaptable too - every person and every business is different so listen and tailor our story and responses to their questions accordingly.

4.     Be interested, as well as interesting

When speaking to a business owner, ask questions, listen, make it about the them, not you. Don't "sell", develop a relationship. Remember - you're there because you're interested in helping them.

5.     Role play

Practice how you respond to objections and rejection. Don't be disheartened or become rude if people don't want to listen to what you have to say. Instead be politely persistent - they may change their minds.

6.     Follow-up

Never leave an exposure without another one being booked in. People are very busy and often forget to reply to emails. Face-to-face contact is more personal and more effective.

7.     Act with integrity

We aren’t in the competition ‘slating’ business. Don’t add fuel to a competitor's fire. The more time you spend talking down the competition, the less time you have to explain what is great about Pixie.

8.    Be understanding of the needs of the business

A business owner is not going to be open to listening to you when they're rushed off their feet. Pick your moment. If you approach someone at the right time, they will be much more receptive.

9.     Remember what’s at the heart of Pixie

We are providing a solution to a problem - not another problem. We are striving to create a more local world.

10.  Determination, authenticity, integrity, passion, intrigue, exploration, independence...

These are just some of the values you need to succeed at Pixie. When what you do becomes a lifestyle, it doesn’t feel like work. You are contributing to creating a more local world - so enjoy it!

The Five Things That Make Being a Pixie Tech Developer Different

PixieEngineers

Senior Developer -

Carl Saunders

Meet Carl, he's a Senior Developer at Pixie. We spoke to Carl about what makes being a Tech Developer at Pixie different.

The freedom

Pixie is a small company that is growing fast - so you’re given a lot of responsibility from the very beginning. Even when I first started, I was allowed a lot of independence and trusted to use it. This means I can put forward new ideas and push the boundaries of what we‘re achieving with our tech all the time.

The innovation

Here at Pixie we are constantly using new technology. As a team, we think it's important to motivate our tech developers so that we’re never bored. It’s really exciting times at the moment being able to work at the forefront of what’s being achieved with blockchain.

The variety

Because we’re a small team we can get our hands dirty working directly on a lot of different projects. I rarely spend long periods working just on one thing. As a start-up we work with very quick changes. So, our team has adopted a new way of working called the “scrum approach”. Rather than working on one project for sixth months before showing the business what you’ve created, we work in two-week blocks. This means we can get almost instant feedback from the business and be constantly reacting to new developments in the tech world. Here at Pixie, the app is always evolving.

The team

One of my favourite things about Pixie is how relaxed the atmosphere is. It’s so far from stuffy office jobs I’ve had before. There’s no need to wear suits, everyone is really friendly, the working environment is really chilled...I enjoy it so much that, when two developer friends told me they were looking for work, I recommended them to Pixie to help with the needs of our constantly growing team.

The ethos

When I first joined Pixie, what impressed me most was the team commitment to the Pixie vision of creating a more local world. That passion is felt from the top levels of the company right the way down. Caring about what you do makes it so easy to get the work done - not only does it matter to you, you also enjoy it!

Do you:
-  Love tech and want to be at the forefront of new technologies
- Want to be part of creating a more local world
-  Have the energy and determination to build on our momentum

Meet our graduate Amelia..

180427_PIXIE-BATH-Business-Headshots-_0016_WEB.jpg

What attracted you most about Pixie after graduating?

Pixie is a small team but we're growing fast. So from the very start, you're given a lot of responsibility. It's scary at first but also really exciting.

As a new graduate, you don't have that much workplace experience. But what I love about Pixie is that, even when you're not experienced in a certain area, your voice is still heard. It's less hierarchical than a big corporation - meaning you can be more creative and independent.

How would you describe start-up life?

When things happen at Pixie, they happen quickly. Start-up life is incredibly fast-paced, things change all the time. But that's what makes the job so exciting. You learn quickly how to be adaptable.

What do you enjoy about working for a mission-led business?

The difference with Pixie is that you believe in what you're doing. Whenever I go into work in the morning, I feel like I'm doing a good thing. It makes the work meaningful - and for me that's really motivating.

What different type of roles have you learnt?

Oh god, where do I start? Sales, relationships with businesses, event organisation, project management, sponsorship negotiations...

I spend most of my time in sales and marketing, explaining the idea and the ethos behind Pixie to people. On top of that it's meant I've learnt so much about tech to understand how the app works, about social media, about how to expand a business, about making marketing plans.

But I've also had a great time being a leaflet dropper, I've ran a market stall at Frome Market, I've learnt to roll the perfect Vietnamese summer roll, and done cocktail masterclasses.

What does a typical day (if you ever have one) consist of?

Here at Pixie, we appreciate that that results only come with time and dedication. We have flexible working hours, but I like to come into the office early in the morning to get started on keeping up to date with what's happening in the communities that I manage. That means finding out about interesting festivals, markets, any kind of events that we might like Pixie to get involved with. I'll often grab a coffee on the way in or go out for lunch at one of our Pixie businesses and have a chat with the owners.

Otherwise I spend my day in a community that I'm managing or in the process of launching. I'll go round visiting current businesses to see how things are going or introducing myself to new businesses.

It's great always having that contact with the people you're working with. And at Pixie, you always end up meeting the most interesting people!

What do you enjoy most about the working style at Pixie?

The variety. I can be in a new place every day. I'm very rarely sat at a desk all day.

If I want to take the initiative to go out to Bristol to look for interesting new businesses to sign up, I have the ability to do that.

What's the most fulfilling part about the job?

When new businesses go live. You start going into cafés and seeing people you don't know using the app. It's really rewarding watching as whole new communities begin to enjoy the great benefits of Pixie.

How would you describe your team?

Funny, friendly, hard-working, motivated to get things done. Working with a team that is so passionate about the mission, you're always reminded of what we're trying to achieve.
